FAQ

General Questions

  • Are dental x-rays safe?

State-of-the-art digital x-rays use minimal radiation so they are very safe. The benefits of detecting unseen health problems far outweigh the low risk.

  • Why do my teeth need to be cleaned professionally?

We can clean areas that you can’t reach with a brush. And even the most thorough at-home brushing won’t keep plaque from accumulating on your teeth. Protecting your teeth requires the special training and tools of our skilled hygienists.

  • What causes bad breath?

While strongly flavored foods can cause an unpleasant odor, it’s usually excessive bacteria that cause bad breath. Good oral hygiene reduces this bacteria.

  • Why are my teeth sensitive?

You may have been eating acidic foods recently. Try gently brushing your teeth more often. If sensitivity continues, we can recommend products to reduce sensitivity and check if dental treatment is needed.

Children’s Dentistry

  • Why should my child have a baby tooth filled if the tooth is going to fall out?

Baby teeth are guides for the development and eruption of permanent teeth so the permanent teeth will grow into the right position. Also, cavities or infections in baby teeth can be transmitted to permanent teeth growing in the jaws.

  • Should I allow my child to sleep with a bottle?

A bottle of water is acceptable but any sweetened or naturally sweet beverage (juice, milk, etc.) will quickly contribute to tooth decay.

  • What should I do if my child has a tooth knocked out?

Find the tooth, picking it up by the white crown. If a permanent tooth, try to reinsert the tooth in its socket. If that is not feasible or if it’s a baby tooth, store the tooth in milk and rush the child (and the tooth) to our office.

  • What do fluorides and sealants do for my child?

Fluoride treatment hardens enamel, making it harder for cavities to get started. Sealants keep sweet foods and bacteria away from tooth surfaces, resulting in fewer cavities.
